Tom Frame, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services East Strathclyde and Glasgow

11 March 2013

Having been made redundant after 20 years in the Electronics industry, Tom Frame found a new career with a ServiceMaster Clean franchise in the East Strathclyde and Glasgow areas.

“Following my redundancy I decided it was time for a new direction and perhaps even to strike out on my own.  After a lot of research on the web and by talking to Business Gateway I concluded that franchising was the safest route when starting up alone.”

When searching for a franchise, Tom set criteria that would aim to satisfy his long term goals.  These included finding a franchise that was both recession and technology proof, could grow year upon year and whilst he was on holiday.

By attending exhibitions and seminars, Tom researched the business sector that would best satisfy these goals. Having decided on the cleaning industry, Tom contacted Franchisors in this field.  “This is when I discovered ServiceMaster Clean” he says.  “After a meeting at ServiceMaster’s head office I established this was an opportunity worth pursuing.”

“My business first began in the East Strathclyde area in June 2003.  The contracts here are mainly with small businesses.  When the Glasgow area became available I was keen to expand my business to cover a broader range of clients and in November 2006 purchased the Glasgow territory.  Glasgow was and is a lucrative area with bigger blue chip businesses.  It was an accruement to purchase an additional territory.”

“From starting out from scratch, with a desk, phone and the yellow pages I am very happy with where I am today!”

“After eight years, I am pleased to report that my business has seen yearly growth. This has been down to my own hard work and the great support and training from ServiceMaster.  The training provided at the initial training ‘Academy’ combined with the ongoing training and support has been the key to this success.”

The ‘Academy’ training is a 10 day programme and is a requirement of all new franchisees prior to training covering all aspects of running the business including staff management and discipline, health and safety, technical, marketing and sales support.

As businesses become established, ServiceMaster Contract Services franchisees are provided with the tools and training to help them manage their growth.  Regular network meetings and seminars allow the sharing of ideas and best practice with fellow franchisees.  Tom adds, “These are important as they make you feel part of a larger organisation whilst running your own independent business.  The annual seminars keep everyone up to date on all issues affecting the cleaning industry.”

“If asked whether I think I did the right thing, I think back to my original criteria.  I can tell you, especially when I am on holiday and the business is still running, that I am able to confirm the answer is yes!   Being in business for yourself isn’t just about money but improving the quality of life and the flexibility it gives.”

“Would I recommend a ServiceMaster Contract Services franchise? Absolutely!  I could never imagine going back to work for someone else again!”
