Simon & Jane Miller went from rubble to riches

When did you become a franchisee?

We started our franchise business in October 2010 with our first studio in Southport.  Then, in May 2013 we opened our second in-toto in a stunning two-storey studio in Clitheroe, known as Ribble Valley. 

What did you do before joining the in-toto franchise?

I used to work in PR and my husband Simon has a background in construction and development.  I handle the designs, orders and marketing for our businesses and Simon uses his experience in the project management of our customers’ projects. 

What research did you do?

We asked everybody lots of questions!  In fact, we still do.  I think it is always important to keep learning and ask questions in all areas of your business.  We regularly speak to our fitters and keep up to date with design trends and market changes.   

Why did you choose in-toto?

Choosing this franchise was an easy decision for us because Simon was so familiar with in-toto and he simply loves the kitchens.  The quality of the products is far superior to any other Simon had previously installed – whenever he fitted an in-toto kitchen, he never had to return to a single one.  Not everyone considering a franchise with in-toto needs to have previous knowledge of the kitchen industry though.  I had no experience in the kitchen business but the product training provided was superb and I felt supported by the network.  With an in-toto franchise, you benefit from knowing you’re not on your own – the stories and tips that we share amongst each other is invaluable.

How has your business progressed?

We faced an extraordinary amount of bad luck when we first started as the recession hit, we were snowed-in during the first winter and the shop front needed replacing not once but twice due to drink-drivers crashing into the window!  But you get out of it what you put in and our strength of character got us through it – we pushed hard with advertising and networking and now it is paying off.  We recently celebrated the end of a busy year with record sales achieved for our Ribble Valley studio in November 2013 - the second highest sales of all in-toto studios nationwide.  This year already looks set to bring more success as both businesses are going from strength to strength and we’re getting regular recommendations.

What has been the best moment?

We were rewarded recently by winning the Neff Masterclass of the Year award - a real highlight and personal achievement for us.  Some of the best moments are when we receive appreciation from our happy customers.  We have a reputation for being genuine and we take a lot of pride in going the extra mile for our clients.
