With age comes beauty… and business!

05 August 2016

We’re living longer than ever before. Over 11.6million people in UK are now aged 65+, that’s a whopping 17.83%. Of this 1.53million people in UK are actually aged 85+ which equates to 2.3% and these figures are not expected to slow anytime soon. Great news for those of us wanting to stick around for a little while longer.

Perhaps this is why generally we are getting married and having children later in life because the fact we are living longer allows us to. The average age for couples to marry is now 32 compared to 1981, some 25 years ago, when the average was 23. Look at sportsmen and women continuing with their sporting careers well into their late 30’s- early 40’s, look at David Beckham who retired as a footballer at 38 years of age.

For many years, the state pension age for men was 65 and the state pension age for women was 60. However from 2020, both men and women's state pension age will be 66, increasing to 67 between 2026 and 2028, and then linked to life expectancy after that. Everything about this sector is on the up!

Since 2005 the population aged 65+ has increased by 21% and the population aged 85+ has increased by 31%. Perhaps the most surprising statistic is that in the 85+ category, 54% of this increase are male. Are men now taking better care of themselves? According to an online survey conducted by roxypalace.com men are now spending an average of £1,786 a year on keeping themselves looking good could this be making a difference?

With these sharp increases comes a very real aging population statistic. It’s estimated that there will be over 6 million people with a long term illness or disability and over 15million people aged over 65 by 2030 in the UK. This highlights the need for more care providers across the UK.

An already huge industry needing many different services is only continuing to expand resulting in the increased demand for care services.  At Clarriots we are experiencing this trend, our network turnover increased again in June by 18.90%, proving there has never been a better time to join our network.
