Hire a Hubby franchisee: Steve Haynes
CV: Previously self employed in Spain
Location: Derbyshire
Bought in September 2009
Steve Haynes says, “It’s a funny name but a serious business.”
Hire a Hubby (HAH) does everything from cleaning someone’s gutters to building an extension on the back of their house, “and that’s what keeps me interested in the franchise,” explains handyman Haynes.
What did you do before you bought a franchise?
Steve: I was working in Spain for eight years however everything went a bit pear-shaped, so I came back to England four weeks ago. I heard about the HAH franchise and went to see them in Potters Bar – I was very impressed.
After I took up the franchise opportunity I went on the training course, and now I’m actually running my own business.
How did you find that transition – living in Spain for eight years moving back to the UK and buying a franchise all in four weeks?
Steve: If I had come back to the UK and tried to do what I’m doing now by myself I would never be at the stage I’m at now, so buying the franchise was the best option.
I’m positive I made the right decision, even though it was a quick move. I’ve started work on my first job with about £45,000 of work in progress, and five quoted customers.
What motivated you to buy a franchise?
Steve: The chance to be my own boss. Another great thing about buying a franchise is you’re already given an established business plan to work from, which provides a certain amount of comfort.
Also, I came back from Spain with limited funds, so I needed to find a franchise that would be in my price range and was a good investment.
Did you find it easy to find a franchise, considering you had limited funds?
Steve: Yes. There are so many different opportunities, and many franchises for less then what I paid. It is important to consider finance, however I think buying a franchise that you have an interest in is also significant.
I loved the business model HAH gave me. I enjoy DIY, and to be able to make money out of a hobby reinforced my franchise decision.
Do you think the HAH franchise is a secure route into business?
Steve: HAH has been going in Australia now for 15 years and they have 300 franchisees. I think a successful brand like this helps you start your own business confidently.
Also, current statistics shows 90% of independent business start-ups fail within the first three years; whereas 90% of franchisees are successful.
What would you advise to prospective franchise buyers?
Steve: Only buy a franchise if you have a passion for the work they do. For example, I wouldn’t get a McDonald’s franchise because I wouldn’t enjoy serving burgers.
What do you think the future holds with your HAH franchise?
Steve: So far business is going well. I’m currently based in Stevenage because we’ve been advertising down there, and we’ve had so much work I’ve had to split jobs.
However, future plans to advertise in Derbyshire will soon start, and then I’ll be based there making sure the franchise attracts many customers. The franchise will definitely keep me busy but I believe the more work you put in, the better results you get out.
