The food and drink sector continues to expand in the UK with franchising offering an optimised route to business ownership in this industry.

The British & International Franchise Exhibition on 9th & 10th March at Olympia London, is the perfect opportunity to find out more.

It's a well-cited trend that British consumers are spending less on belongings and more on experiences, including travel and eating out. The British Franchise Association's (bfa) own research supports this finding, with an 11% increase in franchise units operating in the hotel and food sector between 2010 and 2015.

The variety of franchises on offer in the food and beverage industry gives potential franchisees a range of options.

From global brand names like McDonald's to more niche offerings from operators like mobile coffee franchise Cafe2U, there is something for everyone.

Tom Acland, Managing Director of Cafe2U UK, comments: "We recognised that there was a growing desire among consumers for quality food and drink on the high street. The working population is not on the high street during the day, however, so Cafe2U brings premium quality hot drinks and food to the workplace.

"Our model offers lower overheads for franchisees, as we take them away from the competitive high street and direct to the consumers. The success of this model is demonstrated in our position as the fourth largest coffee chain by unit in the UK."

Pursuing a food and drink franchise

The tried-and-tested franchise blueprint means you could be the proud owner of a successful restaurant, coffee, dessert or fast-food outlet more quickly than you may realise.

After 30 years working within a high-pressure environment in the logistics industry, Matt Hunt felt he needed to do something completely different.

He knew that he had to change his work life. "My phone was always on," he comments. "I was needed day and night and the demands of my job were only increasing."

Matt decided it was time to work for himself, but needed to identify how to make it happen.

Matt headed to The British & International Franchise Exhibition in Spring 2016, to explore the world of franchising and meet different brands. It was there he met Cafe2U, and what started out as an informal chat with a member of the team soon turned into keen interest.

Matt was particularly impressed with Cafe2U's transparent and supportive way of working, and following a short period of additional research, Matt signed as the Cafe2U franchise partner for Stevenage.

After completing the brand's training programme, he opened for business in November 2016.

Matt comments: "I had no experience in the retail coffee industry, but I've been proven right in my choice of partnership with Cafe2U.

"I've received valuable support from head office and the network of existing franchise partners every step of the way, and I still benefit from pro-active and effective input from Cafe2U's business development manager to grow my income.

"I've got a business which allows me to answer to myself and my family in terms of workload, and I thoroughly enjoy making customers happy with great coffee and friendly service."

In recognition of his successful start with Cafe2U, Matt was named 'Supreme Bean' at the company's annual conference, on 3rd February 2018.

The award recognises a new franchise partner who has shown great progress in a short amount of time - excelling in the launch process, quickly establishing a strong customer base and showing impressive barista skills.

Follow in Matt's footsteps

The British & International Franchise Exhibition on 9 & 10 March presents an opportunity to meet with Cafe2U and a broad selection of other food and drink franchises.
