National Coach & Training Development Officer rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted

09 January 2015

Premier Sport’s National Coach and Training Development Officer, Andy Heald unexpectedly covered a PE lesson and found himself being observed by Ofsted inspectors – the decision to go ahead with the PE lesson proved to be an ‘outstanding’ one by the Head Teacher.

St Thomas of Canterbury primary school in Bolton has received specialist sports coaching from Premier Sport for the past six years. When the call from Ofsted came to say they would be inspected the following day, the Head Teacher was already in the process of rescheduling the PE lessons for that week as the usual Premier Sport Activity Professional was away on his honeymoon. After some reassurance, it was agreed that Andy, who has a good relationship with the school and lives in the area, would step in to cover the PE sessions observed by Ofsted.

Andy prepared for the lesson like any other, he used Premier Sport’s online planning framework data and printed off pupil attainment records for each class to help him plan and differentiate his delivery. His preparation for the lessons would ultimately enable Andy to deliver a high quality lesson. He was observed on two separate occasions and the feedback was‘outstanding’.

We’ve taken an extract from the Ofsted report following Andy’s observed session:

Physical Education and sports tuition is a huge strength. The primary sport funding has enabled the school to employ a specialist sports company. Pupils have the opportunity to receive expert teaching. Participation in sporting activities has increased and pupils have access to a much wider range of sports, such as bowling.

Andy said that he learnt a lot from the experience about the right and wrong ways of doing things. He’s confident that by following the Premier Sport model and utilising all resources effectively, all of Premier Sport’s 800+ Activity Professionals across the country are very well placed to perform to the same high standards as he demands.

St Thomas of Canterbury school in Bolton uses Premier Sport to deliver two days per week of PE and five lunch time sessions per week targeting particular groups within the school and supporting competition objections set by the school.
