Suffolk children set for gold with nationwide fitness initiative

07 January 2015

170 children from Grundisburgh Primary School in Suffolk have taken their first golden steps within the safety of their own school grounds after launching a successful national physical activity initiative called The Golden Mile.

To promote the benefits of regular physical activity and in conjunction with Premier Sport, the school has set the children a challenge for every child to walk, jog or run the two laps daily to ensure every pupil completes 50 miles of physical activity over the school year.

Miss Oakley, Teacher at Grundisburgh commented:

‘‘The Golden Mile is a fantastic initiative which gets children doing more regular exercise, whether it be walking jogging or running!

They can do The Golden Mile with friends or on their own and it gives them something to aim for. Collectively we can work together to see how far we can travel. I like the fact that the children are also encouraged to include miles they walk to school, too.”

The oldest and youngest pupils paired up and together cut a golden ribbon to launch the initiative. This theme continued as the oldest and youngest pupils teamed up to complete laps together.”

Tom Frohn, a year 6 pupil said:

“It gives you the chance to catch up with your friends and it keeps you fit!!”

In addition to all the great health and wellbeing benefits, The Golden Mile offers year 6 pupils the opportunity to be Golden Mile Monitors and take ownership within the school.

Stephanie Lloyd Premier Sport’s Golden Mile Project Leader commented:

“The Golden Mile Monitor training with the Year 6 children was an absolute pleasure. They have taken ownership on behalf of the school, they have been so motivated and mature Grundisburghs. The Golden Mile is in very good hands at this school!”
