T & P Regeneration are an environmental consultancy advising on contaminated land. It was set up in 2002 by Mike Nicholas and Richard Blaney and they saw some success for the first few years. However, as the recession hit they found it began to get tougher. As Mike said “The Company began to shrink. I knew we couldn’t go on as we were or we’d ‘circle the drain’ and disappear.” So when their accountant suggested they talk to a business coach from ActionCOACH Mike knew it was a good idea. So they met with the coach and agreed to start weekly one to one coaching. Mike found it immediately beneficial.
“I gained lots of quick wins and got a lot from it. But Richard wasn’t behind it and I needed his buy in.” So they stopped coaching. However, the business continued to struggle and after another tough year Mike and Richard made the tough decision to part ways. Mike then took over the business and decided that he wanted to start coaching again. “I saw it as a springboard for growth. I wanted to become the best I could be.”
“It’s been really useful as a way to reduce the potential for misunderstanding.” They also implemented a number of changes such as regular team meetings and more open communication between all eight employees. Plus they have developed clear job descriptions with agreed targets and key performance indicators. So when this was coupled with clearly defined values Mike saw real improvements “The team spirit is really strong. Everyone understands that there is the right intention behind everything we do”.
Their coach has worked closely with Mike on creating systems and processes that can be measured and optimised. They have increased turnover by 38% but most importantly profits have gone up by 566%.
