Franchise Spotlight: Hotels

Budding hoteliers can enter this multibillion-dollar market via blue-chip,

Generating $59 billion a year, Australia ranks seventh in the world for international tourist receipts, statistics from the UN World Tourism Organization show.

As well as catering to domestic tourists and business travelers, Australian hotels attract millions of visitors from around the world annually, with China, followed by New Zealand, the UK and US, the biggest source of arrivals.

Demand is highly sensitive, among other variables, to the Australian dollar’s relative strength, with a depreciating currency boosting international arrivals and the numbers of Australians holidaying at home. News reports have shown that a surge in domestic tourism partially offset the collapse in inbound tourists during the Covid-19 pandemic, with some hotels hit harder than others.

Franchise market analysis

Aspiring hoteliers can enter the sector under the umbrella of a major hospitality brand by buying a franchise.

Doing so gives them the benefit of a wealth of operational expertise, well-resourced national marketing campaigns, best-in-class property management systems, established supply chains and comparatively low procurement prices.

Franchised hoteliers don’t come much bigger than Accor, the sixth largest hospitality company globally with more than 5,100 hotels in 110 countries.

The French multinational has an eclectic portfolio, with everything from upscale to economy locations, standard, boutique and apartment formats, and sites often adapted to local markets.

Choice Hotels is another hospitality mega brand, with more than 7,000 franchised hotels in 41 countries.

The company’s loyalty program has 350,000 members across Asia-Pacific and it claims to have unrivalled relationships with leading online travel agencies.

With more than 170 locations across the region, Quest claims the mantle of Australasia’s largest dedicated apartment hotel operator.

Like City Edge, an apartment hotel operator with six Melbourne sites, Quest benefits from an industry growth rate for serviced apartment rooms that currently outstrips that of upscale hotels.
