Safety measures for franchises

What safety measures do new franchises need to implement? We'll run through some options in this article.

If you’re setting up a new franchise, it’s important to implement safety measures from the start.

Both small and large organisations are vulnerable during these unstable economic times, so protect your property and premises in any way you can.

Here’s how to safeguard your company:

Carry out a risk assessment

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to supply personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary. Therefore, you must carry out a risk assessment of your property and order adequate and appropriate equipment for all employees.

The last thing you want is a lawsuit for negligence on your hands, so do all you can to take care of those who work for you.

Use asset tags

It’s easy to protect expensive equipment and costly gadgets with a simple asset tag. The idea is that you buy them in bulk, label up your products and scan the unique barcode or serial number into an inventory management system.

This will help you keep track of everything you own, making stocktaking a much simpler task. What is more, tamper evident tags deter opportunistic thieves,  as the stain they leave behind makes items difficult to resell.

Install a burglar alarm

According to the latest police figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), thefts from homes and businesses went up by five per cent between 2010 and 2011. Therefore it is wise to lock all doors and windows and to install a reliable burglar alarm as soon as possible.

These security systems will detect unauthorised entry and will make a loud sound that should scare intruders away. Don’t be afraid to contact the police if you’re worried and have any incidents reported.

Secure your IT equipment

These days, most companies rely on technology to run their business. If you’d be lost without your laptop or PC, be sure to install virus protection software, because Trojan horses and worms can destroy your entire system.

For maximum protection, you could also hire a consultant to find the best security solution for your company. Look for a consulting group with a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CIISP) engineer and ensure they’ve got a CompTIA Security+ Certification.
